Autumn is here! Nature turns into a spectacle of yellow, orange and red. It's the perfect time to go hiking or cycling through the colours, or to head off in a campervan before the nights get truly icy.

Our neighbour the Netherlands tends to be completely packed in summer, with every pitch booked solid. In autumn it's noticeably quieter, and the weather is often still pleasant, with nights around 10°C.

South Holland is particularly worth a visit in autumn. The province in the west of the Netherlands has something for everyone: autumn walks on the endless sandy beaches of Noordwijk, a warm drink at a beach bar in Scheveningen before it closes for winter, or a stroll through Rotterdam. Pack your bike for sure, because the excellent cycle paths make it easy to roll from one place to the next.

Late summer in Sardinia

Autumn conditions: 14° - 24°C | 5 rainy days

Anyone looking to escape autumn weather and stretch the summer a little longer will find what they need on the Italian island of Sardinia. In October temperatures can still reach above 20°C, the Mediterranean is still warm enough for a swim, and it's only from November that autumn really sets in, with more rain and cooler water.

You can take the overnight ferry from Genoa or Livorno and wake up in Sardinia the next morning. Besides the island capital Cagliari, the small towns of Bosa and Alghero in the northwest are worth the trip: colourful houses, charming alleyways and a palm-lined promenade where you can watch the boats bobbing in the harbour. Sardinia also has wild hiking terrain and peaceful beaches for those who need a proper rest.

Autumn in Slovenia

Autumn conditions: 8° - 15°C | 13 rainy days

The Slovenian autumn is similar to the German one: more rainy days and noticeably cooler temperatures. Here's why it's still worth heading there with a campervan.

Western Slovenia offers campers two very different experiences. In the southwest near Piran you still get late summer weather: enjoy the storytelling architecture that recalls Croatian coastal towns, wander through cosy alleyways and eat well. In Tritriglav National Park things are different entirely: mysterious autumn, impressive waterfalls, the turquoise Soca river and breathtaking lakes. The whole park, especially in autumn, feels like an enchanted forest you never want to leave.

Germans' favourite island: Mallorca

Autumn conditions: 15° - 23°C | 6 rainy days

Mallorca offers similar weather to Sardinia in autumn. From the mainland via Barcelona you can reach the island quickly, and it's noticeably less crowded in autumn. The weather is still pleasant and summery.

Mallorca as a camping destination in autumn

Mallorca works as a camping destination for all kinds of travellers. Active visitors will enjoy mountain biking, road cycling or hiking, while those who prefer a slower pace can stroll through charming towns and work their way through the local food.

Golden southern France

Autumn conditions: 10° - 20°C | 7 rainy days

Southern France is the right autumn camping destination if you want colourful nature without grey, drizzly weather. The Provence in particular has a beautiful autumn with plenty of sunshine, while the vineyards glow golden.

For many, October is the best time to visit southern France: the tourist crowds thin out and so does the heat. Temperatures become pleasant enough to explore the beautiful towns along the Mediterranean coast, while the low sun creates a wonderful light. The grape harvest is winding down too, so winemakers have more time to show you their best Provence wines over a tasting.
