About the site
Hello dear campers, Welcome to wild camping in my orchard in the UNESCO Global Geopark Ries! My meadow orchard is one of my absolute favorite spots. It was planted by my grandfather, and I'm gradually replanting the trees, mostly with heirloom fruit varieties. The orchard is located just outside *my* village in the Nördlinger Ries region and is surrounded by fields. It's on a gentle slope. You have a clear view almost all around. A modern mill is located about 100 meters away as the crow flies. Between them is a meadow with a grassy path. About 30 m from my orchard, the mill canal flows past as a narrow river (Eger). Since the access is via a grassy, slightly downhill track (approx. 200m), which requires a 90-degree turn, the road is not suitable for caravans and very large motorhomes. The pitches are only accessible to fully self-sufficient vehicles (black and grey water!). If you plan to camp, please bring your own camping toilet or folding spade. The garden is a natural wildflower meadow that is only mowed about twice a year. When fruit (apples, pears, plums) is ripe, you are welcome to help yourself to it for your breakfast. I've laid out paving slabs. You can build a fire there—at your own risk and full liability—using a fire basket or fire bowl. You'll need to bring your own wood. A barbecue station (charcoal grill, grill cart with grilling utensils, and chimney starter) is also available. 🥩🍖 If desired, I would be happy to provide two sturdy ramps to compensate for the slight slope. There's also a lounge couch (made from pallets) that you're welcome to use. Remember to bring cushions for a comfortable chill. And also a *Bavarian orchard basket* (=beach chair). 😉 By the way: Did you know that traditional orchards have been included in Germany's Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO?!?! So, just feel at home there... with so much UNESCO 😉 LEISURE TIPS: ⇒ Nördlingen is located on the Romantic Road, has a beautiful medieval old town, a completely walkable city wall, the Ries Crater Museum and the St. George's Church with its 90m high church tower, Daniel, a beautiful vantage point. And there is now also the Gerd Müller memorial for the nation’s bomber ⚽. ⇒ The UNESCO Global Geo Park Ries offers several hiking trails: https://www.geopark-ries.de/geopark-wege/ The Shepherd's Trail runs right past *my* village. It was voted the most beautiful day hike in southern Germany (and the fourth most beautiful in all of Germany) in 2024. https://www.outdooractive.com/de/route/wanderung/donau-ries/geopark-ries-schaeferweg/193239592/#caml=7ps,1pu72x,82p66l,0,0 The Lindle Geotop / Nature Trail and the Swedish Trail are only 2-3 km away. ⇒ Dinkelsbühl, voted the most beautiful old town in Germany, is also only about 30km away. ⇒ Harburg/Swabia is also very beautiful, with its castle on the rock (approx. 25 km away). This is one of the largest, oldest, and best-preserved castle complexes in southern Germany. https://www.stadt-harburg-schwaben.de/poi/schloss_harburg-364/ ⇒ And the area around Christgarten (with its wildlife park (wild boar enclosure)) in the Carthusian Valley is also very idyllic for hiking and cycling (about 10 km away). https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kloster_Christgarten ⇒ You can kayak and canoe on the Wörnitz River. It's about six stages from Dinkelsbühl via Oettingen to Donauwörth. https://www.faltboot.org/wiki/index.php?title=W%C3%B6rnitz ⇒ Because the Ries region is generally very flat, it's ideal for cycling. There's a wide selection of bike paths. SHOP LOCALLY: In the village there is the mill shop (e.g. flour, pasta, oils, vinegar, muesli, dried fruit, honey and fruit spreads, eggs, tea, spices, snacks, etc.), a butcher's shop (local sausage and meat) and a farm shop (depending on the daily offer, e.g. regional meat (lamb, game, poultry), wood-fired bread, eggs, liqueur, honey, spreads, cheese, etc.). In Nördlingen there are various supermarket chains, weekly markets, several butchers and bakeries, etc. The Gasthaus Vierkorn is open regularly on Fridays (and occasionally on other days). You can bring your own snacks and purchase drinks (just like in Bavarian beer gardens). I hope you have fun camping 😎🏕️🚙 *** Any liability on my part for personal injury or property damage, for example, if you twist your ankle on the meadow or a branch falls from a tree onto your vehicle or tent during a storm or thunderstorm, is hereby excluded. ... So far, nothing of the sort has happened, and hopefully it stays that way! ***

Regarding "expectation management": - Please do not cause any damage to the neighboring fields and my fruit trees. - Please do not leave any rubbish behind. Sorry, it sounds stupid, but I don't want to be a camper like that. *** Any kind of liability on my part for personal injury and property damage, e.g. if you twist your foot on the lawn or a branch falls from a tree onto your vehicle or tent during a storm or thunderstorm, is hereby excluded. ... So far nothing like that has happened and hopefully it will stay that way. *** *** If you light a fire (e.g. in a fire bowl or fire basket), you do so at your own risk and assume full liability. ***

Everything was wonderful! Pure peace and quiet. We'd love to come back.

A pretty orchard in the heart of the Ries region with a view of the hills. The mill's farm shop is nearby, and Nördlingen is a 30-minute walk away. I took a SUP tour on the Wörnitz River, another (!) very peaceful, pure nature experience.

We were lucky enough to meet Gerhard and his godchild and spent a lovely and entertaining evening together around the fire pit. The site is wonderfully quiet, and access is no problem, even with our semi-integrated vehicle. Now we're going on a hike with our dogs to the nearby Lindle Geopark.
